Observations on savanna burning in the Olokemeji forest reserve, Nigeria.
Abstract
In derived savanna, tree cover measured in various ways was not significantly related to the dry weight of the herbage layer before or after burning. The percentage of the herbage layer burnt was 25% by weight for burns early in the dry season and 84% from Jan. onwards. 75% of the annual production of aerial shoots by the herbage layer was lost to the biological system when the savanna was burned after Dec.-R.B.
