A comparison between productivity in forest and savanna in Africa.
Abstract
Gives estimates of net primary productivity derived from studies of (1) a forest (climatic climax) site and (2) a savanna (fire climax) site in Nigeria [cf. F.A. 27 No. 28] and from other sources. 'Total' productivity for (1) is given as 20.2 tons/ha./year and for (2) 10.8: to the Y-shaped energy flow concept, with (a) grazing or browsing and (b) detritus pathways must be added (c) a fire pathway. Tentative values of % primary production flowing along the three pathways are: in (1) 67, 33 and 0 and in (2) 10, 30, 60 for (a), (b) and (c) respectively.
