The effect of cultivation on the vertical distribution of seeds in the soil.
Abstract
Linseed and lucerne seeds were sown broadcast over a 100 m2 field which was then ploughed twice at right angles to 20 cm and harrowed to a fine tilth. The vertical distribution of the seeds was then examined. Half the linseed seeds and 1/4 of the lucerne seeds were recovered. Numbers recovered increased with depth; 75 % and 74 % of the recovered lucerne arid linseed seeds were found in the lowest 8 cm of soil examined and 7.5% and 8.8% respectively, in the uppermost 8 cm.
