A comparison of British and North African varieties of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) IV. Tiller production in single plants.
Abstract
Spaced plants of the British S170 and the north African Syn I and Syn II were grown in the open from April to December 1962. Initially the north African varieties tillered more rapidly than S170, but after October the reverse was true. S170 probably produced tillers more rapidly in October, because its leaves expand less rapidly as the temperature falls, leading to an accumulation of assimilates which are available to support the expansion of an increased number of lateral buds into tillers.
