Yields of monocultures and mixtures of two grass species differing in growth habit.
Abstract
Dactylis glomerata was grown with either Lolium perenne or Agrostis tenuis in proportions ranging from monoculture of one species to monoculture of the other. Mixtures did not outyield the highest-yielding monoculture despite differences in species height, stubble morphology and seasonal growth, nor did they give a more regular seasonal distribution of DM production. D. glomerata, which had the tallest tillers, was competitively superior and this was primarily due to competition for light.-R.B.
