Control of vegetation succession by means of soil fabrics.
Abstract
In a glasshouse experiment, galvanised iron wires or woven fibre-glass strands placed 3 cm below the soil surface constricted the tap roots of Quercus rubra seedlings from planted acorns. A field experiment in which the effect of plastic cloths or galvanised iron wire on invasion of soil by Fraxinus americana seedlings was studied suggested that a surface fabric might exclude larger seeds from suitable germination sites.
