Ecological studies of the vegetation of the Sudan. IV. The effect of simulated grazing on the growth of Acacia senegal (L.) Wild. seedlings.
Abstract
Describes a study of seedling survival after simulated browsing (removal of the cotyledons of 3-day seedlings, or the leading shoots of seedlings 1-11 weeks old). Simulated browsing caused serious mortality and a great reduction in dry-matter production and the numbers of lateral roots formed. Mortality was greatest when the plants were browsed at age 2-7 weeks, and this critical stage appears to coincide with the formation of the lateral roots. [Cf. F.A. 32 Nos. 5674-5.
