Variation in growth and development in natural populations of Dactylis glomerata from Norway and Portugal. 2. Leaf development and tillering.
Abstract
Cocksfoot from Norway and Portugal was grown in controlled environment at 5, 15 or 25°C with 8 h high-intensity light/day with or without a further 16h/day low-intensity light. Major differences between populations were found in short photoperiods at 5°C where the rate of leaf expansion was much greater in the Portuguese material. Differences in tiller number were also greatest at 5°C, where Portuguese material had most tillers because of earlier emergence of the first tiller, despite slower subsequent rates of tiller production. At 15 and 25°C differences between populations were less marked.
