The colonisation of isolated patches of nettles (Urtica dioica L.) by insects.
Abstract
U. dioica plants were established in 1970 at 2 sites in E. England in order to study their colonization by insects. Twentyeight species commonly associated with nettles colonized some of the plants within the first year and 39 within 3 years. Eighteen species were more or less host specific to U. dioica and 21 were polyphagous or predatory. The rate of colonization by insects depended on the proximity of existing U. dioica populations.
