The relationship between soil aeration, stability and growth of Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) on upland peaty gleys.
Abstract
Describes studies in a stand of P. sitchensis planted in 1947 in Northumberland, UK and showing early signs of windthrow when studies began in 1970. Soil anaerobiosis occurred in all but the top 10-15 cm of the soil profile in winter; soil O2 status varied between sites and better aeration was associated with reduced soil water potential; the largest and most suitable trees grew on the sites with best aeration. Suggestions are made for a cultivation treatment (formation of ridges and furrows) to prevent prolonged waterlogging.
