Rodent ecology and land use in western Ghana.
Abstract
Rodent numbers were estimated by trapping (on the ground) in 8 habitat types representing the major land uses in an area where primarily tropical rain forest was being felled and replaced (sometimes only temporarily) by agriculture and domestic housing. The numbers, biomass and diversity of small rodents increased after clearing. Several arboreal forest species were not recovered by trapping. The commonest species trapped (and the only ones present in all habitat types) were Praomys tullbergi and Lophuromys sikapusi.
