A re-appraisal of Hartley's agrostological index.
Abstract
The Agrostological Index of Hartley, based on the native grasses of an area, was intended as a climatic index, but in the absence of the computational facilities now available, was in advance of its time and has been neglected for this reason. A method of construction of the index is outlined and applied to the 15 Pastoral Districts of Queensland. The results are considered to show that the index is a potentially valuable tool for defining agronomic regions and one that can be used predictively. The procedures described could prove useful on the world scale.
