A reinterpretation of yield relationships in replacement series experiments.
Abstract
Replacement series experiments are commonly used to study interactions between component spp. in a mixture. Conventional data analysis compares actual yields with yields that would occur if competition between spp. were equal (expected yields). Comparisons with expected yields are of limited value since they do not assess the contributions of intra- and inter-specific interference to the determination of mixture yields. An alternative approach is proposed involving different comparisons, using data from a field experiment in 1980 with Setaria viridis and Echinochloa crus-galli in pure stands and in mixtures of varying proportions.
