On the analysis of competition within two-species mixtures of plants.
Abstract
Agrostemma githago and wheat cv. Sicco were grown in 1981 in monocultures and 1:1 mixtures at total densities of 16, 40, 120, 400 or 1200 seeds/m2. A model to describe competition in the mixtures is presented, which can be used to estimate survival, mean yield/plant and yield/unit area for each spp. at any combination of frequency and density. It was suggested that the model should be used in preference to replacement series analysis where both frequency and total plant density vary e.g. in weed-crop systems and in intercropping situations.
