Nitrogen-fixation and nutrient relations in savanna woodland trees (Tanzania).
Abstract
Foliar nutrient relations of 13 non-N-fixing and 14 potentially N-fixing broadleaves at 5 savanna woodland sites were compared with data on soil nutrients. Nodulation and nitrogenase activity were confirmed in mature specimens of 12 of the potential N-fixing species (Acacia goetzii, A. nigrescens, A. nilotica, A. polyacantha, Dalbergia melanoxylon, D. nitidula, Dichrostachys cinerea, Entada abyssinica, Pericopsis angolensis, Pterocarpus angolensis, P. rotundifolius, Xeroderris stuhlmannii). N limited growth in non-N-fixing species at most sites, while P was limiting for N-fixing species.
