Culm dynamics and dry matter production of bamboos in the Wolong and Tangjiahe giant panda reserves, Sichuan, China.
Abstract
Estimates for Fargesia spathacea, Sinarundinaria fangiana and F. scabrida, respectively, were: av. above-ground biomass 23.7, 7.4, 9.3 t/ha; av. net annual production 3.6, 1.5, - t/ha; av. annual culm recruitment 8.2%, 10%, 13.7%; av. annual culm mortality 10.6%, 9.1%, 8.5%; shoots killed by insects, giant pandas, rodents and other predators 46%, -, 45%. S. fangiana flowered and died in 1983.
