The vegetation of post-logged black spruce lowlands in central Canada. II. Understorey vegetation.
Abstract
Logged Picea mariana-dominated stands in NE Ontario were surveyed to examine patterns of vegetation colonization and the extent of successional return to pre-logging characteristics. Data were analysed for 244 plant species in 122 stands covering a chronosequence of 56 yr, by two-way indicator species and detrended correspondence analysis. Variation could be attributed to three factors: nutrient status of the site, skidding method (horses vs. wheeled vehicles) and non-convergent successional pathways.
