The influence of canopy architecture on stemwood production and growth efficiency of Pinus contorta var. latifolia.
Abstract
Data are presented from plots in pure stands of naturally regenerated P. contorta in SE Wyoming, USA, varying in age (25-117 yr), site index (10.8-22.0) and density (263-24 000 stems/ha). Stemwood growth was related to the amount and vertical distribution of leaf area. In general, high stand 'vigour' (resistance to pests or pathogens) was associated with deep full crowns and rapid individual tree growth, but high stand growth efficiency and stemwood production were associated with short compact crowns and modest individual tree growth.
