Core areas for wetland birds in Zuid-Holland. Importance of these [areas] for international obligations regarding other bird species.

Abstract

Wet grasslands (21 190 ha) in the province of Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, are internationally important as a core area for black-tailed godwits (Limosa limosa). Most of the core area (92%) is farmland and 1745 ha is nature reserve. Recommendations to improve habitats are increasing water levels over 5924 ha, remove 237 ha of shrub and woodland, and cut annually 50 t of reed to create more open habitat. Initial costs are estimated at 15 million EURO, as well as annual costs of 5.7 million EURO. Other wetland birds will also benefit from these habitat improvements.
