Links between natural environments and mental health.
Abstract
This briefing summarises the evidence of the links between the natural environment and mental health in the UK. It is based on a rapid review of the literature and is not a systematic review. The notes are aimed at policy-makers, practitioners, practice enablers, local decision-makers, and the wider research community. The briefing highlights that there is strong evidence that exposure to nature can have a positive impact on mental health. This includes reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; improving mood; and increasing self-esteem. The briefing also discusses some of the implications of these findings for future policy, service delivery, and research.
