Feasibility study for the biocontrol of Elodea nuttallii and E. canadensis: Final Report.
Abstract
This report focuses on the North American aquatic plants Elodea canadensis (Canadian pondweed) and E. nuttallii (Nuttall's waterweed), particularly their spread and impact in the UK. It highlights the negative effects of these invasive species on aquatic habitats and explores current management strategies for their control. Surveys conducted in 2022 in England found minimal damage to these plants from natural enemies (invertebrates or pathogens), suggesting that their lack of biological control may contribute to their invasiveness. The feasibility of using biological control, i.e. introducing host-specific natural enemies from North America to manage these species in the UK, is considered a potential sustainable solution. Additionally, the report discusses research into a rapid, inexpensive method for distinguishing Elodea species from similar aquatic plants, which could be adapted for practical field use.
