NatureScot Research Report 1311 - Study to determine deer welfare issues relating to use of image intensifying Rifle sights for the culling of deer at night.
Abstract
This report provides an update on the use of thermal imaging technology for nighttime deer culling in Scotland, comparing it with traditional methods using telescopic sights and spotlights. Key findings include the ease of use of thermal imaging sights in the field, comparable performance with conventional sights in varying weather conditions, and challenges in determining deer species and sex. The study also highlights safety risks and animal welfare considerations, with results aligning closely with previous research by Cockram et al. (2011), indicating no increased risk to deer welfare.
