NatureScot Research Report 1333 - Deer management skills and capacity - initial scoping report.
Abstract
This report provides an update on the capacity to manage deer in Scotland, focusing on the human and physical resources required to meet the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy targets by 2030 and 2045. It assesses current industry and college capacities, outlines opportunities for future capacity building, and articulates the sector's potential evolution, including challenges and opportunities for developing fit-for-future skills. Key findings indicate that to achieve the additional annual cull of 50,000 deer, between 118 and 236 full-time equivalent staff may be required. While core qualifications are commercially available, skill gaps exist in areas such as butchery, habitat impact assessment, and data analysis. The report also highlights the need for improved data collection and integration for better long-term planning. Recommendations for further work and research are provided, acknowledging that this initial scoping exercise is limited by time and budget constraints.
