Abstract

DNA-based methods provide promising opportunities for species and assemblage monitoring, especially for difficult-to-observe taxa. Despite advancements, significant gaps in DNA reference libraries hinder broader adoption. Natural England, as part of the Defra DNA Centre of Excellence, has been working to address these challenges through the UK Barcode of Life (UKBOL) project. This report outlines progress in barcoding priority species, including databasing 2862 specimens from 1515 species and sequencing 1171 specimens from 750 species. The UKBOL dataset now includes 23,795 specimens across 7935 species, with updates to the project's website and data portal to support ongoing gap analyses. These efforts enhance the UK's capacity for environmental species monitoring and conservation.
