Natural England (NE), Andy Nisbet.
Abstract
This presentation highlights the importance of environmental monitoring from an England perspective. Monitoring serves multiple purposes, including reporting on targets and indicators, providing evidence for informed action and evaluation, and understanding long-term changes and risks to natural capital. However, several challenges exist, such as addressing issues of scale, ensuring access to data, navigating the complexities of natural processes and climate change, measuring benefits to people, and leveraging technology effectively. Despite these challenges, significant opportunities are emerging, including engaging communities and land managers, utilizing advancements in technology and metrics, applying data science, and gaining new insights into environmental systems. This comprehensive approach underscores the critical role of monitoring in driving sustainable environmental management and policy.
