Abstract

This presentation outlines the monitoring activities of Forest Research, focusing on understanding the impacts of nitrogen deposition on forest health and function, through initiatives such as ICP Forests and the National Forest Inventory (NFI). The NFI collects key data on woodland size, species, and forest management across Great Britain, while ICP Forests measures various environmental factors, including rainfall chemistry and tree growth, to assess the effects of nitrogen deposition. The presentation also highlights the emergence of forest pests, climate change responses, and the need for integration of monitoring data across different land uses and ecosystems. It emphasizes the importance of using remote sensing, validating environmental data, and enhancing monitoring of soil greenhouse gas fluxes to better understand forest ecosystems' condition and their response to environmental stressors.
