Abstract

The UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) is a critical initiative aimed at understanding trends in insect pollinator populations across the UK. By generating systematic data on the abundance and diversity of bees, hoverflies and other flower-visiting insects, PoMS supports the evidence base for National Pollinator Strategies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The scheme employs two key approaches, i.e. Flower-Insect Timed (FIT) Counts, conducted by volunteers in diverse settings from April to September, and 1.0 km square surveys, which involve pan trap sampling, habitat assessments and FIT Counts at stratified sites. Species-level data for bees and hoverflies are identified by expert taxonomists, while broader insect group abundance is recorded. Future prospects include integrating data with other national monitoring schemes, enhancing taxonomic breadth using DNA barcoding, and expanding collaborations with NGOs and museums to strengthen training and outreach. These efforts contribute to the development of metrics and indicators for UK environmental targets.
