Abstract
This presentation delves into the role of environmental monitoring in assessing and safeguarding the health of the UK countryside. It highlights the National Habitat Monitoring Scheme (NHMS) and related programs, which track long-term ecological changes, chemical exposures, and the effects of policy and regulation on wildlife and ecosystems. Key findings include the rise of Deformed Wing Virus in bees in agricultural areas with high insecticide use, persistent wildlife exposure to rodenticides despite stewardship efforts, and interim indicators linking chemical exposure to environmental harm. The presentation also emphasizes the need for better integration and accessibility of geographically and spatially referenced data, promoting broader usability through the NC-UK program to support national research and conservation goals.
