Undergraduate Summer School

The Undergraduate Summer School is aimed at undergraduates at a UK or Irish University studying a degree relating to ecological sciences

Summer School 2021

BES Summer School 2021, will be taking place 12th – 16th July 2021 online with some outdoor activities! This year we will be taking undergraduate students from the UK AND Ireland from all year groups who are studying a degree relating to ecological sciences, including biology and geography.

The emphasis of Summer School 2021 is to bridge the skills gaps you may have encountered over the last year. We want to focus on future leaders and to help you progress with your career in ecology. Within the application process we are seeking your views on the most useful content to include. We have lots of exciting plans in process but the most important aspect is to provide an experience that will enhance your opportunities to succeed. The Summer School will online via digital platforms and can be carried out from home.

Apply as a PhD mentor:

Each year we have a group of mentors taking part in the Summer School who are current PhD student. The mentors will each have a group of mentees who they will interact with throughout the week. We will work with the mentors to determine the skills in which they wish to gain experience in and incorporate this into the content for the Summer School where appropriate, e.g. there are opportunities to gain teaching experience and development of sessions, experience in the use of digital platforms and develop skills in mentoring a group of undergraduate students.

The BES is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information. For details on how we may use your data, please see our Privacy Policy.

Applications are now closed. If you have applied you can continue to access the PhD mentor guidance and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

If you have any queries regarding this please contact the Education and Engagement Manager, Amy Padfield

Applications to apply as an undergraduate are now closed.

Past Summer Schools

The Summer School took place online in 2020 due to restrictions from COVID-19. Over the course of the week, students participated in expert-led science sessions, online interactive elements and career development workshops. There were plenty of opportunities to network with fellow undergraduates, PhD students, ecological academics and professionals. Whilst the Summer School was an intense experience, jam-packed with activities, it was extremely beneficial and lots of fun!

In previous years we have been lucky enough to visit some amazing locations to deliver the Summer School. Below are some images of previous years and an insight into the fieldwork, careers and ecological sessions Summer School alumni have taken part in!
